THE 7 OLFACTORY FAMILIES

Perfumery has a very large range of raw materials (

about 1500 different ones at least), whether:

• Animal material: ambergris, musk, castoreum and civet ...
• Vegetable materials: petals, flowers, rhizomes, roots, wood, bark, grass, leaves, fruits, seeds, pods, beans, gums, resins, algae ...
• Synthetic materials obtained from petroleum (mineral origin), turpentine or basic raw materials of chemical industry: coumarin, aldehyde, hedione, vanillin ...

As a consequence, a fragrance is a complex essence composed of multiple essential oils. To speak of a perfume, to describe it, there is a classification that divides the fragrances in different types. Here it is:

1. THE HESPERIDIA FAMILY

Their composition: citrus fruits such as bergamot, lemon, orange, mandarin and grapefruit, orange blossom, the petitgrain, neroli.

Their accords: floral, cyprus or woody.

What characterizes them: fresh and light notes.

2. THE CYPRUS FAMILY

Their composition: oakmoss, cistus-labdanum, patchouli and bergamot chords.

Their accords: fruity or floral.

3. THE FLORAL FAMILY

Their composition: one-flower compositions (rose, jasmine, ...) or bouquets that combine several flowers.
